Concerto grosso. Eino Tamberg - with Estonian Sinfonietta
“I had not actually intended to write a concerto grosso at all; I simply wanted to write a concerto. Since the Estonian Radio Symphony Orchestra had many outstanding wind players at the time, I decided to use a wind ensemble. But the title became rather cumbersome: Concerto for Five Wind Instruments, Piano, Percussion and Strings. Then it occurred to me that works of this kind had once been called concerti grossi.”
The work proved exceptionally successful. In 1957, it was awarded a gold medal at the 6th World Festival of Youth and Students. This success led to performances of the Concerto grosso throughout both Eastern and Western Europe and marked the beginning of Tamberg’s distinguished international career as a composer.
This evening’s programme features another work that received an award for the best musical composition. In 1984, the expert council of the Tartu Popular Music Days bestowed this distinction on Eino Tamberg’s pupil Alo Mattiisen for his humorous and innovative Typewriter Concerto in D. The work marked the beginning of Mattiisen’s meteoric rise on the Estonian music scene.
A. Adam/C.Pugni - J. Martinez "Le Corsaire" with the Estonian National Ballet
Choreographer José Carlos Martinez: “I have never danced this ballet myself, but I found it interesting to create something traditional rather than a contemporary reworking of a classic. I wanted to bring something uniquely personal to the production while highlighting the brilliance and beauty of the ballet’s most celebrated moments: the enchanted garden scene, the grand pas de deux and the dance of the slaves. I therefore opted for a pure, classical version, as magical and fairytale-like as Giselle or The Nutcracker, while simplifying the dramaturgy of what is otherwise quite a complicated story. My focus is on the love story of the two protagonists, Medora and Conrad. This allows the audience to enjoy both their romance and the adventures of the familiar characters surrounding them…”
“I was inspired by Lord Byron’s poem and Adolphe Adam’s original score, which I adapted where necessary. I placed all the famous numbers at the heart of the ballet, and built my story around them.”
The distinguished Spanish dancer and choreographer José Carlos Martinez’s production of Le Corsaire is a true treat for ballet lovers, all the more so as Le Corsaire enters the repertoire of the Estonian National Ballet for the very first time.

P. Tchaikovsky - R. Beaujean "Swan Lake" with Opéra National de Bordeaux
Created in 1877 to Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score, Swan Lake has continued to evolve, from Marius Petipa to Rudolf Nureyev. This new version by Rachel Beaujean and Colin Richmond offers an interpretation that delves more deeply into the psychological dimension of the characters: Odette is no longer merely a victim; she chooses her own destiny. Caught between nature and society, she asserts a freedom that the world denies her.
Carried by the elegance of Tchaikovsky’s score, this production brings contemporary themes — domination, inheritance and emancipation — to the fore, restoring the ballet’s full dramatic power. Here, the final transformation is no longer an inescapable fate, but an act of freedom.

Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Eller - with Marcel Johannes Kits and Estonian Sinfonietta
Two masterpieces of the symphonic repertoire are brought together: Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Italian Symphony. Although composed in different eras, they reveal fascinating parallels as well as striking contrasts. Together, they frame the Rococo Variations — a refined homage to the Viennese Classical tradition.
Estonia’s vibrant contemporary music scene, centred in its capital Tallinn, is distinguished by a remarkable concentration of outstanding orchestras and ensembles. The Estonian Sinfonietta, together with its conductor Maria Seletskaja, is one of the country’s foremost musical ambassadors. The award-winning Estonian cellist Marcel Johannes Kits has likewise attracted considerable international attention.

S.Prokofiev - R. Nureyev "Romeo and Juliet" with the English National Ballet
Irresistible attraction, all-consuming passion, tragic consequences: Shakespeare’s heartbreaking tale is reimagined in a ballet that is “as vital, as alive and as stirring as can be” (The Telegraph ★★★★★).
Renaissance Italy, city of Verona. Tensions run high between the Montagues and the Capulets as the families stand on the brink of violence. Against the backdrop of simmering hatred, fate intervenes: love blooms across the divide. Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet fall desperately in love. Can young love survive in a world ruled by conflict?
Created nearly 50 years ago for Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee, Rudolf Nureyev’s Romeo & Juliet still has the power to grab you with its electrifying drama.
From love at first sight to the final devastating embrace, the iconic story comes alive on stage.

L. Sumera/M.-M. Lill - M. Kesler "The Lizard" with the Estonian National Ballet
According to the choreographer Marina Kesler “the world of “The Lizard” is extremely exciting. The plot takes place in two parallel worlds – there is the shooting of a film, where on the background of war a love-story progresses and the world behind the scenes, where love suddenly becomes a reality. As a stage director I tell a very human story about love where the two realities entwine so completely that the protagonists do not understand what is real and what happens in the movies, and this will bring about a tragic ending. Sumera’s music is very powerful and gives strong choreographic impulses. It is amazing, how contemporary, and actual the libretto is! It lacks the cliché plot of classical operas and ballets, where most of the events are predictable. “The Lizard” is a story of real people, a story told from heart to heart”.

G.Bizet/R.Shchedrin - J.Inger "Carmen" with the English National Ballet
With its fiery drama and iconic music, Carmen never ceases to thrill. In this reimagined version, choreographer Johan Inger takes audiences deep into the passions and dark undercurrents of the original story – imbuing the enduring tale with new resonance.
Sensual and spirited, Carmen turns every head – including Don José’s. But when she refuses to fall under his control, he plunges into an abyss of jealousy and rage, with tragic consequences.
Inger’s choreography combines contemporary and classical movement to powerful effect. Nine large movable mirrors frame the action – transporting us from a town square through to the troubled mind of Don José. Menace and foreboding loom over the stage, thanks to additional music by Marc Alvarez which complements Bizet and Shchedrin’s classic score, performed live by English National Ballet Philharmonic.

A.Khachaturian - V.Galstyan "Gayane" with the Estonian National Ballet
Gayane is one of the signature works of 20th-century ballet. It gave the world the legendary “Sabre Dance” as well as the sensual “Adagio,” showcasing both the company’s powerful energy and the soloists’ refined artistry. The ballet features virtuosic ensemble scenes, elegant pas de deuxs and rhythmically irresistible folk-inspired motifs that lend the score its distinctive, unmistakably Armenian voice.
“Gayane” is a tale of courage, loyalty and love, told through Aram Khachaturian’s enchanting music and the vibrant rhythms of the Caucasus. Set against the backdrop of the Armenian mountains, the story follows the young woman Gayane as she faces moral choices – whether to follow her heart, defend her home and community, or give in to fear. The ballet’s dramaturgy intertwines the glittering variations of classical dance with the fiery temperament of character dances, creating a richly coloured stage world that is both poetic and impetuous.

P.Tchaikovsky - M.Petipa/T.Edur "The Sleeping Beauty" with the Estonian National Ballet
On her christening day Princess Aurora is cursed by the wicked fairy Carabosse: one day the Princess will prick her finger on a spindle and die. But the kind Lilac Fairy tempers the curse so the Princess will instead fall asleep for 100 years until Prince Désiré will break Carabosse’s wicked spell. With a classical score by Tchaikovsky, new redaction of Petipa’s choreography by Thomas Edur and fantastic design by Peter Docherty, the ballet will offer a visual feast to all lovers of magic and fairy-tales. Charles Perrault created many of the most popular fairy tales, including “Cinderella”, “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Puss in Boots”. Many of these characters will appear in the last act of the ballet. “The Sleeping Beauty” is the second of Tchaikovsky’s three ballets and it is widely regarded as his finest ballet score, making it a staple ballet with many theatres all over the world.

"Rhythm Riot" with the English National Ballet feat. Stravinsky, Vasks and Tru
One stage, three moods. Explosive energy. Deep resonance. Unstoppable drive. Feel the pulse of ballet now.
A rhythm that ignites the night, George Balanchine’s Symphony in Three Movements is a 21-minute corker. No tutus – only leotards, no tiaras – only ponytails, and no story – only the bold propulsion of Stravinsky’s percussive music driving 32 dancers to an explosive conclusion.
Micaela Taylor’s Bow Out (world premiere) is a rhythm that won’t let you sit still.
Auguries of Innocence (world premiere) a poetic meditation on our connection to the natural and spiritual worlds. For this new work, Jae Man Joo draws inspiration from the poetry of William Blake and the music of Peteris Vasks – both rich with anguish, yearning and lyricism.
